This page contains exercises to help you learn and practice WordFisher. These exercises were written to accompany the Tutorial. You can access the Tutorial throughout the exercises by clicking on the "note" links. Before starting the exercises, I strongly suggest you read the foreword and introduction to the Tutorial.

FILE MANAGEMENT

• In Windows Explorer, create a new folder called WordFisher.
• Download the file wfexer.zip and put it in that folder.
• Unzip the file. It contains six files to help you practice and do the exercises. The files are in English (source language) and French (target language), but it may be useful anyway to other language pairs to understand the software. To help you with the exercises, I suggest you follow the WordFisher Tutorial. It was written using information in the official WordFisher User Manuel. The Tutorial has notes and explanations of the functions used in the exercises. It is not as complete as the User Manual, but it follows the order of the exercises.
• In Windows Explorer, under the folder WORDFISHER, create a subfolder called WFEXER.
• Still in Windows Explorer, copy ONLY the file wfen.doc in the subfolder WFEXER.
• Open Word. In the toolbar menu there should be a button with a Fish. This is the button to activate and disactivate WordFisher's tooldbars.
• Before starting the exercises, I strongly recommend you read the section on WordFisher's toolbars in the Tutorial.




CREATING A PROJECT

1. Create a WordFisher project for the wfen.doc, which is in the WFEXERsubfolder.




TRANSLATION AND SEGMENTATION

2. Translate the first four segments of the document wfen.doc. While translating, try the following functions:
• Quick Alignment toolbar (note)
• NextSegment button (note)
• ShowSourceSentencebutton (note)
3. Put your cursor in the middle of the segment 5 and click on the button ShowSourceSentence. What happens? As explained in the Tutorial, the segment is too long to be displayed in the box. If you want to be able to view the source sentence with ShowSourceSentence button, you can shorten (split) the segment by creating green codes (index strings) within already segmented parts.
4. Split segment 5 just before the work because. (note)
You will learn more about segmentation in the "PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND SEGMENTATION" section later on.



SEARCHING

5. Create a group to search the reference file wfref-bil.doc. (note)
6. Search the translation of mutual fund trust. (note)
7. Add the file wfref-bil1.doc to the list of files to be searched. (note)
8. Search the translation of flow-through entities.




CREATING GLOSSARY

9. Create a new glossary (called glossary1.doc) to put the expressions searched above.
10. Close and save the file glossary1.doc. WordFisher doesn't save glossary files automatically.
11. Open the file wfref-bil1.doc.
12. Create another glossary (called glossary2) to put the following terms and their equivalents (found in the file wfref-bil1 that you have just open). (note)

13. Close and save the file glossary2.doc .
14. Finish translating the first paragraph.




CREATING BILINGUAL CORPUS WHILE TRANSLATING

15. Create a table with the first translated paragraph. (note)
16. Search the translation of flow-through in the table that you have just created. (note)
17. Translate the first sentences of the second paragraph.
18. Update the table (the one created in exercise 15). (note)




REPLACE

19. Replace investisseur by épargnant in the current document (using WordFisher's Replace function). (note)
20. Recreate your table (created in exercise 15) to take the change into account. (note)
21. Close the project. (note)




CREATING BILINGUAL CORPUS WITH PAST TRANSLATIONS (ALIGNMENT)

22. Align the reference documents wf-refENG et wf-refFRE. Name the file wf-refbil3.doc (note)
23. Close all files.
24. Open the project again. (note)
25. Finish translating the document wfen.doc




EDITING (ADD, ERASE, MODIFY TERMS) AN EXISTING GLOSSARY

26. Once the translation is finished, put the following terms and their equivalent (from the SRD and TRD file of your current project) in the glossary2.doc file created in the exercise 12.
• taxable income
• distributions
• investor
27. Erase the entry funds|fonds from glossary2.doc.




PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND SEGMENTATION

28. Add the file wfen1.doc to the project. (note)
29. Look closely at the way WordFisher segmented the text. What happened to the abbreviations U.S. and U. S.? Add those abbreviations to the exclusion list. (note)
30. To correct a "wrong" segmentation, you can erase the unecessary index stings (note) in the current file, this will allow you to join the parts that were not segmented correctly. Or you can prepare again the file for translation. To do so, close the current project. Then go to Windows Explorer, to the folder WFPR and erase the files wfen1.TRD and wfen1.SRD. Go back to Word and reopen your project. Select the file wfen1.doc as you had done in exercise 28. WordFisher will prepare it for translation, that is will segment it. Now that the abbreviations above are in the exclusion list, WordFisher should segment the text correctly in those places.
31. Count the number of words with WordFisher (Statistics Project). (note)
32. Close the file.




PRETRANSLATION

33. Pretranslate the file wfeng1.doc with the glossary2.doc file. Don't forget to check the Mark Revisions On options. (note).
34. Open the file wfen1.trd (the file is not always saved automatically; save the pretranslated file with revision marks).
35. Close the file.
It is also possible to use a bilingual corpus or aligned file to pretranslate a document. You should read the Tutorial notes on pretranslating with bilingual corpus before doing the next exercise.
36. Open the reference document wf-refbil3.doc created at the exercise 22 and save it under the name wf-reftabl.doc. Convert the table into text using the Convert to text function of Word, with the pipe separator | (code ANSI 0124). To get this symbol, press the ALT key on the left of the spacebar and, while keeping the ALT key pressed, press the keys 1,2,4 consecutively on the numerical pad (NumLock has to be activated).
37. Pretranslate the file wfeng1.doc with the reference document wf-reftabl.doc you have just created. Don't forget to check the Mark Revisions On options.
38. Accept all changes in the pretranslated file wfeng1.doc with Word's Revision function (Tools|Track Changes...)
39. Save the file wfen1.doc.
40. Finish translating the text wfen1.doc.
41. Close all documents.




EDITING A PROJECT (TRANSLATION)

42. Edit both translated files of the project using WordFisher. (note).
43. You client just called to tell you to translate mutual fund with fonds commun de placement. Add this entry in singular and plural to the file glossary2.doc.
44. Check terminology of the files in the project against the one used in the file glossary2.doc (note).




FINISHING A PROJECT (TRANSLATION)

45. Create bilingual corpus with the two translated files.
46. Export your translations.




CONVERT TO TRADOS FORMAT

47. Convert one of the bilingual table (located under TABL) created at the exercise 45 into Trados format, name the file wfen-trados.doc .




PROJECT AND FILE MANAGEMENT - FINALISING

49. Close the project and all the files.

In Windows Explorer:

50. Rename both translated files, adding FR at the end, thus wfenFR.doc, wfen1FR.doc.
51. Move the translated files and the Trados file (wfen-trados.doc) in the WORDFISHER folder.
52. Erase the files and folders that you do not need anymore.
53. Smile. You have just finished WordFisher's Tutorial.
